LECTURES „CZECH JEWELLERY – PAST AND PRESENT“

As a follow-up to launching an exhibition of contemporary Czech jewellery „Handmade Dreams“ in Korea this year, the Czech Centre Soul in cooperation with Seoul Jewelry Industry Support Center, Fashion Jewelry Town in Daegu and Iksan Jewelry Museum organized a series of lectures by Petr Nový, the chief curator of the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou. Lectures „Czech Jewellery – Past and Present“ intended for university students and professors of relevant majors, designers and jewellery producers introduced the phenomenon of jewellery in Jablonec including historical development of the glass jewellery production in Czech from 3rd century BC to present-day‘s production of Czech leading companies and designers. Besides the lectures Petr Nový participated in meetings with local artists, specialists and Korean company representatives held in Daegu and Seoul.

The jewellery production started in Jablonec in the 17th century and 200 years later became a world-wide known product. Jablonec belonged to the world jewellery business centers and local products were exported all over the world. Until today the region of Jizera Mountains, where Jablonec is located, is considered to be one of a well-respected centers of jewellery production. In this region more than 100 small or bigger companies fabricate jewellery products including Preciosa Group, which is the biggest producer of glass pearls in the world.

The chief curator of the Museum of Glass and Jewellery Petr Nový has prepared more than 50 exhibitions dealing with historical and contemporary glass and jewellery in the Czech Republic and abroad including permanent exhibitions in the Museum of Glass and Jewellery, the glass workers´ settlement Kristiánov and the glassworks František in Sázava or successful touring projects especially made for the promotion abroad as the exhibitions Brilliant by Design”, Handmade Dreams” or Hot and Cold”. In cooperation with the Gallery Kuzebauch in Prague he organized exhibitions for international fairs as Ambiente in Frankfurt or Révélations v Paris. As a curator he cooperates with a number of leading glass and jewellery producers (Preciosa Ornela, Preciosa Lighting, Moser, Lasvit, Riedel) in the long term. Petr Nový determines the concept and the organization of the International Triennale of Glass and Jewellery, which is the largest project of its kind in Europe. Besides that he engages in lectures. From 2008 to 2012 he gave lectures on the history of glass and jewellery at the Faculty of Science, Humanities and Education, Technical University of Liberec. Besides Czech and Slovakia he lectured on the Czech glass and jewellery in many other countries as Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Canada, USA or Japan. Moreover he is a member of jury in competitions Junior Glass Ways, Master of Crystal or Ludwig Moser Award. As a jury he was invited to the competition Stanislav Libenský Award and Glas und Garten in Germany. From 2009 - 2011 Petr Nový occupied a position of a vicechairman of the Czech Glass Society. From 2011 he has been an editor in chief of a professional journal „Sklář a keramik“ and currently has been a member of an editorial board of the North Bohemian Museum’s anthology „Historia“. Petr Nový has published about 70 books and catalogues and has written about 80 professional articles. In 2015 he received the Czech Glass Society Award.
