KARROMATO

The puppet theatre company Karromato was founded in Prague in 1997 by artists from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Spain bringing together their experience from various theatrical backgrounds. Karromato’s marionette spectacles have delighted audiences in nearly 40 countries across Europe, Asia and America. The company follows on from the classic traditions of European marionette theater; all its productions speak directly to the heart without words, using music, universal humor, and the unique personality of hand-crafted marionettes. Karromato makes all its marionettes in its own workshops, using wood, with utmost attention to details in painting, costumes and sets. The traditional materials and techniques evoke a nostalgia for a by-gone age and the magic of childhood dreams. The company believes in the natural ability of marionette theatre to captivate spectators by making use of the charm inherent in the movement of the marionettes combined with a rhythmic, musical story. That is why, it has created productions which for the most part do not resort to the spoken word. Karromato's work follows the tradition of classical Central European marionette shows. It preserves their traditional values, not just as museum pieces, but also as a living form of contemporary theatrical expression, which captivates and entertains both young and adult audiences.

The founders members of the Czech marionette theatre company Karromato Pavla Srncová and Luis Montoto learned their skills as puppeteers and puppet-makers in the workshops of various old puppet masters not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Spain and Italy.  Since 1997 they have produced 6 performances – a musical performance «The Red Queen’s Cabaret»(1997),  a traditional marionette show «The Wooden Circus»(1998), glove puppet shows «Babu, an European adventure»(2000) and «Devinocomedia»(2006), a marionette opera «The Emperor’s Feast»(2002) and a performance with marionettes and shadows «Fireside Tales»(2009). From 2011 to 2015 they organized an international puppet theatre festival «Toulavé loutky» in the South Bohemia. With companies from France and Romania they co-organized two European cultural projects – «Vagabondages» (2010 – 2012) and  «Itinerance» (2013 - 2015). Moreover they have their own private collection of Czech traditional marionettes, which has been exhibited in several countries. Their work promoting the Czech puppet theatre tradition has been recognized at many international festivals. Nowadays the company is working on the new performance «Somnium Morientis».

THE WOODEN CIRCUS

Acrobats, exotic animals, clowns... The Wooden Circus is a performance full of imagination, energy, perfect timing and surprises. The show dazzles with secret special effects from classic 19th century European marionette theater. Beautiful hand-carved wooden marionettes and traditional music will take the audience back in time to the golden age of puppetry. This production was inspired by 19th century variety shows, which amused spectators during the intermissions between long classic puppet plays. Still in the 21st century it is able to entertain today’s audience without regarding to any age or nationality.
